Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dopacone is a fixed-dose combination medication containing levodopa (a dopamine precursor), carbidopa (a peripheral aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor), and entacapone (a selective, reversible catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitor). It is indicated for the treatment of patients with Parkinson's disease who experience end-of-dose 'wearing-off' symptoms. Levodopa crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted into dopamine to replenish deficient levels in the brain. Carbidopa prevents the peripheral breakdown of levodopa, reducing systemic side effects and increasing the amount of levodopa that reaches the brain. Entacapone further extends the half-life of levodopa by blocking its metabolism by catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) in peripheral tissues, ensuring more continuous and stable dopaminergic stimulation.
