Overview
A combination of levodopa, a dopamine precursor used to treat Parkinson's disease, and memantine, an NMDA receptor antagonist used to treat moderate-to-severe Alzheimer's disease. Levodopa crosses the blood-brain barrier and converts to dopamine in the brain, supplementing the low endogenous levels in Parkinson's disease. Memantine works by blocking NMDA receptors involved in glutamate signaling. This combination may be used in patients who have both Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease or dementia symptoms.
