Overview

Levofloxacin + clindamycin is a combination of two antibiotics used together to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, particularly when both aerobic and anaerobic coverage is needed. Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, thereby blocking DNA replication and leading to bacterial cell death. Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, primarily affecting anaerobic bacteria and some gram-positive organisms. The combination may be used in clinical scenarios where mixed infections are suspected or confirmed, such as intra-abdominal or soft tissue infections. Studies have shown synergistic effects against certain anaerobes when these drugs are combined[1][3]. Both agents should be prescribed with caution due to their individual side effect profiles.
