Levofloxacin + streptomycin is an antibiotic combination therapy that pairs a fluoroquinolone antibiotic (levofloxacin) with an aminoglycoside antibiotic (streptomycin). This combination leverages complementary mechanisms of action to treat bacterial infections, particularly multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Levofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing DNA replication and transcription. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Streptomycin, one of the oldest antibiotics for tuberculosis treatment, binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis. It is now primarily used as a second-line agent due to resistance and toxicity concerns. The combination has been studied specifically for treating multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, where it has shown clinical efficacy when used alongside other second-line antituberculosis medications.
