Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Levofloxacin inhalation solution (MP-376) is a nebulized formulation of the broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic levofloxacin, specifically optimized for delivery to the lungs. It is developed for the management of chronic respiratory infections in patients with cystic fibrosis, particularly those caused by *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. By delivering the antibiotic directly to the site of infection via inhalation, the therapy achieves high local concentrations in the lungs necessary to overcome resistant pathogens while minimizing systemic exposure and associated side effects. Levofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair. Originally developed by Mpex Pharmaceuticals, the product has been evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials to improve lung function and reduce the need for other anti-pseudomonal antibiotics in stable cystic fibrosis patients.
