Overview

Aviane is an FDA-approved, low-dose combination oral contraceptive (COC) containing the synthetic progestin levonorgestrel and the synthetic estrogen ethinyl estradiol. It is a generic version of the reference drug Alesse. The primary mechanism of action is the suppression of gonadotropins (luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone), which inhibits ovulation. Additionally, it increases cervical mucus viscosity to impede sperm penetration and alters the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. Aviane is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy and is also used off-label for the management of acne, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and dysmenorrhea. Clinical research, including studies by Oregon Health and Science University, has evaluated its pharmacokinetics and efficacy in specific populations, such as obese women.
