levonorgestrel + meloxicam

IG-002 is an investigational oral combination drug being developed by InnovaGyn, Inc. for pregnancy prevention through the delay of ovulation. It consists of 1.5 mg of levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin, and 15 mg of meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that acts as a COX-2 inhibitor. The combination is designed to be taken in two doses 48 hours apart, specifically when an ovarian follicle reaches approximately 17mm in diameter (typically 2 days before anticipated ovulation). By combining the hormonal effects of levonorgestrel with the prostaglandin-inhibiting effects of meloxicam, the treatment aims to extend the window of ovulation delay to at least 7 days, thereby preventing fertilization. This synergistic approach is intended to provide a more effective method of emergency contraception or pericoital pregnancy prevention than levonorgestrel alone, particularly in the late follicular phase.
