lidocaine + chlorhexidine

Lidocaine + chlorhexidine is a non-systemic combination of a local anesthetic and a broad-spectrum antiseptic, formulated primarily as gels, sprays, lozenges, and solutions for short-term mucosal use in procedures or symptomatic treatment of inflamed or infected mucosa. Lidocaine is an amide-type local anesthetic that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in peripheral nerves, inhibiting depolarization and conduction of pain impulses to produce rapid, reversible surface anesthesia. Chlorhexidine is a cationic bisbiguanide antiseptic that binds to microbial cell walls and membranes, increasing permeability and causing leakage and cell death, with strong activity against Gram-positive bacteria and broader activity at higher concentrations. Together, the combination provides dual action—rapid pain relief from lidocaine and local infection control and antisepsis from chlorhexidine—for indications such as urethral anesthesia and disinfection before urologic procedures, and as part of sore throat or oral antiseptic products in some markets.
