Overview

A buffered local anesthetic solution that combines lidocaine (an anesthetic), epinephrine (a vasoconstrictor), and sodium bicarbonate (a buffering agent). The addition of sodium bicarbonate raises the pH of the acidic lidocaine-epinephrine solution to a more physiologic range, which significantly reduces the burning sensation during infiltration and speeds up the onset of anesthesia. The epinephrine component helps to prolong the anesthetic effect and reduce bleeding at the injection site. This combination is commonly used for office-based procedures, particularly in dermatology and emergency medicine.
