Lidocaine + Functional Microarray (FMA) is a combination product consisting of a 4% lidocaine gel and a microneedle-based delivery device, developed by the University of Oklahoma. The FMA device is designed to create microscopic channels in the skin's stratum corneum, thereby bypassing the primary barrier to drug absorption and allowing the lidocaine gel to penetrate more rapidly and deeply into the dermis. This system is specifically being evaluated for its ability to provide fast-acting topical anesthesia for painful procedures such as venipuncture. Lidocaine, the active component, is a local anesthetic that works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes, preventing the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses that transmit pain.
