Overview

This investigational combination therapy, developed by Queen's University, is a novel magnesium-based trigger point infiltration formulation designed to treat chronic myofascial pelvic pain. The formulation consists of four active components: lidocaine, magnesium sulfate, dextrose, and sodium bicarbonate. Lidocaine serves as a local anesthetic to provide immediate pain relief. Magnesium sulfate is included to inhibit the release of calcium, which is thought to propagate pathologic myocyte contractions in trigger points. Dextrose is utilized for prolotherapy, aiming to provoke a regenerative tissue response in painful syndromes. Sodium bicarbonate is added to the mixture to neutralize the acidity of the lidocaine, thereby decreasing the pain associated with the injection itself. The therapy is administered via intramuscular injection directly into myofascial trigger points within the pelvic floor muscles.
