Overview
Lidocaine + menthol is a combination topical medication used for the temporary relief of pain and itching associated with minor burns, sunburns, minor cuts and scrapes, insect bites, muscle and joint aches or other minor skin irritations. Lidocaine acts as a local anesthetic by blocking sodium channels in neuronal cell membranes (Sodium channel protein type 1 subunit alpha), thereby reducing nerve signal transmission and numbing the area. Menthol provides a cooling sensation by activating cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors on sensory nerves and also has mild local analgesic effects. This combination is available over-the-counter in various formulations such as gels or patches[1][3][4][5][6][8].
