Overview

Lidocaine + propofol is a combination of two small molecule drugs used primarily in anesthesia. Propofol is an intravenous general anesthetic agent that induces and maintains anesthesia by potentiating the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors, leading to central nervous system depression. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic and class Ib antiarrhythmic that works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby inhibiting nerve signal transmission. When administered together—either as sequential injections or as an admixture—lidocaine significantly reduces the pain associated with intravenous injection of propofol without compromising anesthetic efficacy. This combination is widely used in clinical practice for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in adults and children undergoing surgery[1][4][7]. Lidocaine may also reduce the required dose of propofol for induction[7].
