Overview

Lidocaine + salbutamol is a combination of two active pharmaceutical ingredients used primarily for the prevention and attenuation of bronchoconstriction, particularly in patients with bronchial hyperreactivity or asthma undergoing airway instrumentation. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic and antiarrhythmic agent that stabilizes neuronal membranes by inhibiting ionic fluxes required for the initiation and conduction of impulses, thereby reducing airway irritation but potentially causing initial bronchoconstriction. Salbutamol (also known as albuterol) is a selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that acts as a bronchodilator by relaxing smooth muscle in the airways, counteracting bronchospasm. When administered together—either via inhalation or with intravenous lidocaine plus inhaled salbutamol—the combination prevents the initial bronchoconstriction seen with lidocaine alone and provides greater protection against histamine-induced or reflex bronchoconstriction than either drug alone[1][8]. This combination may be recommended to mitigate procedure-related airway reactivity in asthmatic patients.
