Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Buffered Lidocaine J-tip is a needle-free local anesthetic delivery system that combines 1% buffered lidocaine with the J-Tip jet injection device. Developed and studied by Phoenix Children's Hospital, this system is designed to manage procedural pain, particularly during lumbar punctures in pediatric and infant populations. The J-Tip device utilizes a compressed carbon dioxide (CO2) cartridge to deliver the anesthetic intradermally to a depth of 5–8 mm in approximately 0.2 seconds, bypassing the need for traditional needles. Lidocaine, the active pharmaceutical ingredient, is a small-molecule local anesthetic that functions by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cell membranes. This action prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby providing rapid local anesthesia. The addition of a buffering agent (typically sodium bicarbonate) to the lidocaine solution helps to reduce the stinging sensation upon injection and speeds the onset of the anesthetic effect.
