Overview
lidocaine hydrochloride + glycerin + benzalkonium chloride is a multi-component pharmaceutical formulation used for topical anesthesia, lubrication, and antiseptic protection. Lidocaine hydrochloride is an amide-type local anesthetic that stabilizes the neuronal membrane by binding to and inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels, which prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses. Benzalkonium chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound, serves as a rapidly acting surface antiseptic that disrupts microbial cell membranes, providing broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. Glycerin (glycerol) acts as a humectant and lubricant in urological applications, facilitating the insertion of catheters or endoscopic instruments. In otic preparations, glycerin provides osmotic activity to reduce edema in the ear canal. This combination is primarily indicated for urethral anesthesia during medical procedures and for the symptomatic relief of ear pain associated with otitis media or externa.
