Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Limonene + pinene is a combination of two naturally occurring monoterpenes, d-limonene and alpha/beta-pinene, which are widely used in phytotherapy for their synergistic medicinal properties. This combination is most notably recognized for its role in the dissolution of cholesterol gallstones (cholelithiasis), where d-limonene acts as a potent solvent for cholesterol. Additionally, the pair is a core component of standardized essential oil distillates, such as Myrtol, used to treat acute and chronic respiratory conditions like bronchitis and sinusitis. In these contexts, pinene provides anti-inflammatory and bronchodilatory effects, while both terpenes contribute to enhanced mucociliary clearance and antimicrobial activity. The combination is also being explored for potential neuroprotective and anxiolytic effects due to its interaction with neurotransmitter systems.
