Overview

**Liothyronine + methimazole** is a combination of two pharmaceuticals with directly opposing effects on thyroid hormone metabolism. **Liothyronine** is a synthetic form of the active thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3), acting as a thyroid hormone receptor agonist to increase metabolic rate and compensate for hypothyroidism. **Methimazole** is an antithyroid thionamide that inhibits thyroid peroxidase, thereby blocking the synthesis of thyroid hormones and used to treat hyperthyroidism. The combination is not commonly used in clinical practice and is generally advised against due to antagonistic pharmacological actions, unless specifically indicated in rare specialist protocols, as their effects counteract each other. No marketed fixed-dose combination product using both substances was identified.
