Lipiodol + chemotherapy refers to a combination therapy primarily used in the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this approach, **Lipiodol**, an iodized ethyl ester of poppyseed oil fatty acids (radiopaque, oil-based), is mixed with one or more cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents such as doxorubicin, cisplatin, mitomycin C, or 5-fluorouracil. It is delivered via transcatheter arterial infusion directly into the hepatic artery feeding the tumor (either as part of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy [HAIC] with lipiodol embolization or as conventional transarterial chemoembolization [cTACE]). Lipiodol acts as a drug carrier, allowing selective, prolonged drug delivery to tumor tissue, and causes transient embolization, leading to local tumor necrosis. The mechanism of action combines cytotoxicity from the chemotherapeutic agent with the embolic and carrier functions of Lipiodol, maximizing local anti-tumor effect while minimizing systemic toxicity[1][2].
