Lipiojoint (polyethylene glycol microspheres) is a biocompatible, non-resorbable embolic agent developed by Terumo. It consists of spherical hydrogel particles made from a polyethylene glycol (PEG) backbone. These microspheres are specifically designed for permanent embolization of target vasculature, most notably in genicular artery embolization (GAE) for the treatment of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. By occluding the small vessels supplying the inflamed synovium, the microspheres reduce hypervascularity and associated inflammatory pain. The PEG-based chemistry provides high compressibility and elasticity, which facilitates smooth delivery through microcatheters and ensures effective distal occlusion. Beyond osteoarthritis, these microspheres are utilized for the embolization of hypervascular tumors and arteriovenous malformations.
