Overview

A research drug combination consisting of the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and the small molecule TRPV1 antagonist BCTC. This combination is utilized in clinical research models, notably by Stefan Heber at the Medical University of Vienna, to investigate the molecular pathways of inflammatory pain and hyperalgesia in human skin. LPS is administered intradermally to induce a localized inflammatory response and pain sensitization via Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) activation, while BCTC is co-administered or subsequently administered to evaluate the specific contribution of the Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) ion channel to acid-induced pain within the inflamed tissue. This experimental setup allows researchers to differentiate between various mechanisms of pain hypersensitivity in a controlled human model.
