Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bupivacaine liposome is an extended-release formulation of the amide-type local anesthetic bupivacaine, utilizing the DepoFoam multivesicular liposomal delivery technology. This system allows for the controlled release of the drug over an extended period, typically up to 72 hours, following a single administration. The mechanism of action involves the reversible blockade of voltage-gated sodium channels on nerve membranes, which prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby providing localized analgesia. Developed by Pacira BioSciences, it is FDA-approved for postsurgical local infiltration in adults and children (6 years and older) and for specific regional nerve blocks, such as interscalene brachial plexus block, to manage acute postoperative pain while potentially reducing the need for systemic opioids.
