Overview
Liposome bupivacaine is an extended-release formulation of the amide-type local anesthetic bupivacaine, utilizing the DepoFoam multivesicular liposomal delivery technology. Developed by Pacira BioSciences, it is designed to provide prolonged postsurgical analgesia by slowly releasing bupivacaine over an extended period (up to 72 hours), thereby reducing the need for systemic opioids. The drug works by binding to the intracellular portion of voltage-gated sodium channels, blocking sodium influx and preventing the generation and conduction of nerve impulses. It is primarily administered via local infiltration, field blocks, or interscalene brachial plexus nerve blocks for various surgical procedures.
