Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bupivacaine liposome (brand name: Exparel) is a long-acting, extended-release local anesthetic formulation developed by Pacira BioSciences. It utilizes the DepoFoam multivesicular liposomal drug delivery system to encapsulate bupivacaine, a small molecule sodium channel blocker, allowing for controlled release over approximately 72 hours. By inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels on nerve cell membranes, it prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby providing prolonged postsurgical analgesia. It is primarily indicated for single-dose infiltration in adults to produce postsurgical local analgesia and as an interscalene brachial plexus nerve block for postsurgical regional analgesia.
