liraglutide (University Health Network)

Liraglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonist originally developed and approved for the management of type 2 diabetes and obesity. It is a biologic peptide analog that mimics the action of endogenous GLP-1, stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion and suppressing glucagon. Beyond its metabolic effects, liraglutide is being investigated for its potential anti-inflammatory properties. The University Health Network in Toronto is specifically evaluating liraglutide in the Phase II PLAQUE (Psoriatic Arthritis treated with Liraglutide therapy: a QUality of life and Efficacy study) trial. This study aims to determine if short-term administration of liraglutide can reduce joint and skin inflammation in patients with active psoriatic arthritis, using the ACR20 response as a primary efficacy endpoint.
