Overview

Lithium + phenelzine is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used in psychiatry. Lithium is a mood stabilizer primarily indicated for the management of bipolar disorder and prevention of manic and depressive episodes. Its mechanism involves modulation of neurotransmitter signaling and inhibition of enzymes such as glycogen synthase kinase 3 and inositol phosphatases, though the precise mechanism remains unclear[5][7][8]. Phenelzine is a non-selective monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) that irreversibly inhibits both MAO-A and MAO-B enzymes, leading to increased levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the brain; it is mainly used for treatment-resistant depression[2][6][9]. The combination has been reported to alleviate symptoms in severely depressed patients unresponsive to other treatments but carries significant risk due to potential drug interactions[3][1].
