Overview
The live attenuated varicella vaccine manufactured by the Shanghai Institute of Biological Products (SIBP) is a biologic vaccine designed to prevent chickenpox (varicella) caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). The vaccine is formulated using the Oka strain of VZV, which is attenuated through serial passage in cell culture. It is administered via subcutaneous injection and is intended to elicit both humoral and cellular immune responses. Clinical data, including a Phase 3 trial (NCT05158777), have evaluated its safety and immunogenicity in healthy individuals, particularly focusing on a two-dose regimen in populations aged 13 years and older. The vaccine is a key component of the domestic varicella immunization landscape in China, with a reported potency of at least 3.3 lg PFU per dose.
