Drug intelligence / Profile preview
LMX is a brand of topical anesthetic cream containing lidocaine encapsulated in a liposomal delivery system. The liposomal matrix is designed to enhance the penetration of lidocaine through the stratum corneum into the deeper layers of the dermis, providing a relatively rapid onset of localized anesthesia compared to traditional topical formulations. Lidocaine, the active ingredient, is a small molecule local anesthetic that works by binding to and blocking voltage-gated sodium channels on the internal surface of neuronal membranes. This action inhibits the influx of sodium ions required for the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, effectively blocking pain signals from reaching the central nervous system. LMX is commonly used to reduce procedural pain associated with minor dermatological interventions, venipuncture, laser treatments, and skin biopsies. It is available in 4% (LMX-4) and 5% (LMX-5) concentrations and is widely utilized in both pediatric and adult clinical settings.
