lobaplatin + ethiodized poppyseed oil is a chemoembolic combination therapy being evaluated by Guangxi Medical University for the adjuvant treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The regimen involves the intra-arterial administration of lobaplatin, a third-generation platinum derivative, emulsified with ethiodized poppyseed oil (also known as Lipiodol). The ethiodized oil serves a dual purpose: it acts as a radio-opaque contrast agent for imaging and as a drug delivery vehicle that selectively accumulates in the hypervascular environment of HCC tumors. Once deposited, the oil provides a temporary embolic effect, while the lobaplatin induces tumor cell death by forming DNA cross-links and inhibiting DNA synthesis. This specific combination is currently in Phase III clinical trials as a postoperative adjuvant therapy to reduce recurrence rates in patients who have undergone curative hepatectomy for HCC with high-risk factors.
