Overview
Longmu + Gegen, also known as Longmu Gegen Decoction, is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation developed by Xiyuan Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of herpes zoster and the management of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). The formula is a combination of three core ingredients: Longgu (Fossil Bone), Muli (Oyster Shell), and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix). In the context of TCM, it is used to clear heat, resolve toxins, and calm the liver to alleviate severe neuropathic pain. Pharmacologically, the active isoflavones in Gegen, such as puerarin, are thought to provide analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and potentially modulating P2X3 receptors and other ion channels involved in pain signaling. It is typically administered as an oral decoction in clinical hospital settings to reduce the duration of acute shingles pain and prevent the transition to chronic neuralgia.
