Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Loperamide + simethicone is an oral combination medication used to treat acute diarrhea and symptoms of gas such as bloating, cramps, and pressure. Loperamide acts as a μ-opioid receptor agonist in the intestines to slow gut motility and reduce stool frequency by increasing water reabsorption from the intestinal lumen. Simethicone is an antiflatulent that reduces gas by causing smaller gas bubbles in the gut to coalesce into larger ones for easier passage; it is not systemically absorbed. The combination provides symptomatic relief but does not address underlying causes of diarrhea such as infection[1][2][4][5].
