This therapeutic approach is a combination of the oral angiotensin II receptor antagonist losartan and locally injected autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP), specifically investigated for the treatment of acute skeletal muscle sports injuries. Losartan, traditionally used as an antihypertensive, is employed here for its anti-fibrotic properties; it antagonizes the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor, which in turn inhibits the TGF-β1 signaling pathway responsible for fibrous scar formation in injured muscle tissue. By reducing scarring, losartan facilitates more effective muscle regeneration. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) complements this by providing a concentrated source of autologous growth factors that stimulate cellular proliferation and tissue repair. This combination modality, studied by Mostafa Hassanein, aims to enhance the quality of muscle healing and accelerate functional recovery compared to PRP treatment alone.
