Low molecular weight heparin calcium is an anticoagulant small molecule drug derived from heparin. It functions primarily by binding to and enhancing the activity of antithrombin III, which in turn inhibits activated coagulation factors, specifically Factor Xa and, to a lesser extent, thrombin (Factor IIa). This inhibition prevents the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, thereby reducing clot formation. In the context of clinical research conducted by the Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (specifically trial NCT03591471), low molecular weight heparin calcium was utilized as a component of the standard western medicine control regimen for children with Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN). It is used in this indication to manage the hypercoagulable state and microthrombosis associated with glomerular inflammation.
