Overview

Luc+-NSCs are neural stem cells (NSCs) genetically modified to express the firefly luciferase enzyme, serving as a bioluminescent reporter for in vivo tracking. These cells are utilized in preclinical research to monitor the survival, migration, and integration of engrafted stem cells within the central nervous system using non-invasive bioluminescent imaging (BLI). In the context of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Luc+-NSCs have been studied in SOD1G93A mouse models to investigate how the disease's hostile spinal cord microenvironment, characterized by astrogliosis and microgliosis, impacts the longevity of transplanted cells. While they may offer transient functional benefits, their primary utility in these studies is to provide longitudinal data on cell viability post-transplantation.
