Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lugol's solution is an aqueous solution composed of elemental iodine and potassium iodide in water. It is used as a medication and disinfectant for various purposes. Medically, it is primarily used to treat hyperthyroidism (especially in preparation for thyroidectomy), manage thyrotoxic crisis, prevent and treat certain types of goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine exposure, and address iodine deficiency. Topically or orally administered, it can also be used as an antiseptic for minor wounds and as a reagent in cancer diagnosis by binding to glycogen-containing tissues. The mechanism of action involves providing supplemental inorganic iodide/iodine that inhibits the release of thyroid hormones from the gland (Wolff-Chaikoff effect) and reduces vascularity of the thyroid prior to surgery. When applied topically or on mucosae (such as during cervical cancer screening), its staining properties help identify abnormal tissue[1][2][3][5][8].
