LutaPol + ItraPol is a combination of radiopharmaceutical precursors developed by the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) Radioisotope Centre POLATOM. LutaPol consists of lutetium (177Lu) chloride, while ItraPol consists of yttrium (90Y) chloride. These radionuclides are utilized in tandem Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy (PRRT) for the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), particularly those of the gastrointestinal tract. In clinical practice, these precursors are conjugated to somatostatin analogs, such as DOTA-TATE or DOTA-TOC, which target somatostatin receptors (SSTR) overexpressed on tumor cells. The tandem approach leverages the different physical properties of the two isotopes: Yttrium-90 is a high-energy beta emitter with a longer tissue penetration range (up to 12 mm), making it effective for larger tumor masses, whereas Lutetium-177 is a lower-energy beta emitter with a shorter range (up to 2 mm) and gamma emission for scintigraphy, which is ideal for treating smaller metastases and sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
