Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lycopene + SRP is an experimental therapeutic intervention for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. It involves the local delivery of lycopene, a naturally occurring carotenoid and potent antioxidant, formulated into solid lipid microparticles (SLM) and injected into the periodontal pocket following Scaling and Root Planing (SRP). SRP is the standard mechanical procedure for removing plaque and calculus. The lycopene component acts by quenching reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reducing oxidative stress, which are key drivers of tissue destruction in gum disease. This combination was evaluated in clinical trials (e.g., NCT03203746) to assess its efficacy in improving clinical attachment levels and reducing biomarkers of oxidative stress in gingival crevicular fluid.
