Overview

Colopeg is an osmotic laxative indicated for bowel cleansing (lavage) prior to clinical procedures such as colonoscopy, barium enema, or colorectal surgery. Developed by Norgine, it is formulated as a powder for oral solution containing macrogol 4000 (polyethylene glycol) and a balanced mixture of electrolytes including sodium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. The macrogol component acts as an osmotic agent that binds water in the intestinal lumen, increasing the volume of stool and stimulating peristalsis to clear the bowel. The electrolyte components are included to ensure the solution is essentially isosmotic with plasma, thereby minimizing the risk of significant fluid or electrolyte shifts during the cleansing process.
