magnesium chloride + potassium chloride + sodium gluconate + sodium acetate + sodium chloride is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic balanced electrolyte solution used primarily for intravenous fluid and electrolyte replacement and, in some product presentations, for general irrigation, washing, and rinsing. Marketed under brands including Plasma-Lyte A, Plasma-Lyte 148, and Physiolyte, it is manufactured by companies such as Baxter and B. Braun. The formulation contains inorganic electrolyte salts that replenish sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride, while acetate and gluconate are metabolized to bicarbonate precursors and provide an alkalinizing effect. With a near-physiologic pH and osmolarity approximating plasma, it is used in adults and pediatric patients as a source of water and electrolytes, for dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, and as an alkalinizing agent.
