Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Magnesium chloride + sodium gluconate + potassium chloride + sodium acetate + sodium chloride is a **sterile isotonic multiple-electrolyte solution** used primarily for **intravenous fluid and electrolyte replacement** and as an **alkalinizing agent**. Marketed most prominently as **Plasma-Lyte A** and, in irrigating formulations, as **Physiosol/Physiolyte**, the product contains sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, acetate, and gluconate salts formulated to approximate physiologic electrolyte composition. Its pharmacologic effect is not mediated through a single molecular target; rather, it restores extracellular fluid volume and electrolyte balance, while **acetate and gluconate are metabolized to bicarbonate precursors**, helping counter metabolic acidosis. The combination is used as a source of water and electrolytes in adults and pediatric patients, and related sterile formulations are also used for general irrigation, washing, and rinsing. Baxter is the best-known commercial manufacturer associated with this exact electrolyte combination.
