Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Magnesium chloride + sodium gluconate + sodium chloride + sodium acetate is a sterile balanced multi-electrolyte crystalloid solution used as a source of water and electrolytes and as an alkalinizing agent. The combination is marketed in formulations such as Plasma-Lyte A and related Multiple Electrolytes Injection Type 1 products, and is used primarily for intravenous fluid replacement and maintenance in dehydration, volume depletion, and electrolyte disturbances; closely related electrolyte compositions are also used in some irrigation products, although irrigation products are distinct formulations. Its pharmacologic effect is non-receptor-mediated: it expands the extracellular fluid compartment, replaces sodium, chloride, magnesium, and related buffer components, and sodium acetate is metabolized to bicarbonate, helping correct or prevent metabolic acidosis.
