Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Magnesium citrate + magnesium oxide is a combination of two magnesium salts utilized primarily as a dietary supplement and an osmotic laxative. Magnesium oxide is an inorganic salt characterized by a high elemental magnesium content but relatively low solubility and bioavailability. In contrast, magnesium citrate is an organic salt that exhibits significantly higher solubility and gastrointestinal absorption. This combination is often formulated to provide a balance between high magnesium density and improved systemic uptake. Mechanistically, these compounds function as osmotic laxatives by drawing water into the intestinal lumen, which increases intraluminal pressure and stimulates peristalsis. Additionally, they serve as a source of elemental magnesium to support various physiological functions, including muscle and nerve regulation, protein synthesis, and blood pressure management.
