K-2 (also known as K-2 Syrup or K-2 Sugar Free Solution) is an oral fixed-dose combination of magnesium citrate and potassium citrate developed by Stadchem. It is indicated for the prevention of kidney stones (specifically uric acid and calcium oxalate stones) and the management of renal tubular acidosis. Potassium citrate is metabolized to bicarbonate in the liver, which increases systemic and urinary pH, thereby alkalinizing the urine and increasing the solubility of uric acid and calcium salts. Magnesium citrate provides magnesium ions that bind to oxalate in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing its absorption and subsequent urinary excretion, while also directly inhibiting the crystallization and growth of calcium oxalate in the urine.
