Overview

Magnesium sulfate + tramadol refers to the comparative use of these two pharmacological agents as adjuvants to intrathecal bupivacaine for the management of postoperative pain. In a clinical trial conducted by the Armed Forces Institute of Urology, Rawalpindi, these agents were evaluated in adult male patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Magnesium sulfate acts as a non-competitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, which helps to prevent central sensitization and prolong the duration of analgesia. Tramadol is a centrally acting analgesic that provides pain relief through a dual mechanism: mu-opioid receptor agonism and the inhibition of serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake. The study aimed to determine which adjuvant, when added to spinal bupivacaine, provides superior postoperative pain control and better intraoperative hemodynamic stability.
