Overview

Maraviroc + NRTI refers to the combination of maraviroc, a CCR5 co-receptor antagonist, with one or more nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Maraviroc blocks the CCR5 receptor on host cells, preventing entry of CCR5-tropic HIV-1. NRTIs inhibit reverse transcriptase, an enzyme essential for viral replication. This combination is used as part of antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens in adults and children with confirmed CCR5-tropic HIV-1 infection. Maraviroc is not effective against viruses using CXCR4 or dual/mixed tropism and should only be used after tropism testing confirms suitability[2][3][7]. The most commonly used NRTIs in such combinations include tenofovir, abacavir, emtricitabine, lamivudine, and zidovudine[6]. The combination aims to provide synergistic suppression of viral replication by targeting different steps in the HIV life cycle.
