Autologous marrow stromal cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell-based therapy developed by the University of California, Irvine, for the treatment of ischemic stroke. The therapy involves harvesting bone marrow from the patient, followed by a 21-day culture period to isolate and expand the mesenchymal stromal cell population. These expanded cells are then administered via intravenous infusion. The therapeutic rationale is based on the ability of MSCs to home to sites of neural injury and secrete a variety of paracrine factors, including neurotrophic and angiogenic growth factors, which promote neuroprotection, reduce inflammation, and enhance endogenous brain repair mechanisms. This specific cellular product was evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT00908856) led by Dr. Steven C. Cramer to assess its safety and feasibility in patients during the subacute phase of supratentorial ischemic stroke.
