Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Maxilene is a topical anesthetic cream containing liposomal lidocaine, specifically formulated to provide localized pain relief. It is frequently utilized in clinical settings, such as those at The Hospital for Sick Children, to mitigate pain associated with needle-related procedures, including influenza vaccinations, venipuncture, and minor dermatological surgeries. The liposomal delivery system enhances the penetration of the active ingredient through the skin's stratum corneum, allowing for a faster onset of action compared to traditional lidocaine formulations. Lidocaine, the active component, functions by reversibly blocking voltage-gated sodium channels on the internal surface of neuronal membranes. This action prevents the influx of sodium ions, thereby inhibiting the depolarization and subsequent propagation of pain signals along nerve fibers. In clinical trials, Maxilene has been evaluated as a primary analgesic strategy to improve patient comfort during routine medical interventions.
