Overview
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella Virus Vaccine Live is a live attenuated viral vaccine indicated for the active immunization for the simultaneous prevention of measles, mumps, and rubella. The most widely used formulation, developed by Merck Sharp & Dohme (M-M-R II), contains three specific live attenuated virus strains: the Enders' attenuated Edmonston strain (measles), the Jeryl Lynn (B-level) strain (mumps), and the Wistar RA 27/3 strain (rubella). The measles and mumps components are propagated in chick embryo cell culture, while the rubella component is propagated in WI-38 human diploid lung fibroblasts. A key manufacturing evolution, identified as V205C in clinical trials, involves replacing human serum albumin (HSA) with recombinant human albumin (rHA) as a stabilizer to eliminate the risk of human-derived blood product contaminants. The vaccine induces a robust immune response, typically administered as a two-dose series in children starting at 12–15 months of age.
