The Measles and Rubella vaccine delivered via Vaxxas's high-density microarray patch (HD-MAP) is a needle-free, live attenuated vaccine system. Developed by Vaxxas, an Australian biotechnology company, the system utilizes a small patch (approximately 10.6 × 10.6 mm) containing roughly 1,600 microprojections (350 micrometers high) to deliver the vaccine transdermally to immune-rich layers just below the skin surface. This delivery platform aims to elicit protective immunity against measles and rubella viruses while offering advantages such as improved thermal stability (stable at 2-8°C for at least 24 months) and ease of administration in resource-limited settings. Phase I clinical data demonstrated that the vaccine was well tolerated and produced antibody responses comparable to traditional needle-and-syringe administration. Further development is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and PATH.
