Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The measles virus, Edmonston-Schwarz strain (live, attenuated) is a viral vaccine used to induce active immunity against measles. Derived from the original Edmonston strain isolated by Enders and Peebles, the Schwarz strain was further attenuated through multiple passages in chick embryo cells to reduce pathogenicity while maintaining immunogenicity. Developed and manufactured by GSK Biologicals, it is available as a monovalent vaccine under the brand name Rimevax and serves as the measles component in multivalent vaccines such as Priorix (MMR) and Priorix-Tetra (MMRV). The vaccine works by establishing a limited, non-pathogenic infection in the host, which stimulates a comprehensive immune response including the production of neutralizing antibodies and the activation of T-cells directed against the measles virus hemagglutinin (H) and fusion (F) glycoproteins.
